FROM THE NELSEN NEWS, April 2010

PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
Spring is officially here!  I can’t believe that we are already registering students for next year.  We have a wide range of elective classes offered at Nelsen from music to drama.  Be sure to talk to your student about their interests and encourage them to take a variety of classes during his/her three years at Nelsen.

Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) testing, which is the replacement for the WASL, will begin on May 5.   The testing will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 on May 5, 6, 11, and 12.  The tests give you and your child a gauge for where they are in relationship to the state standards, which must be met for high school graduation.  Please take a few moments to discuss the importance of the test with your student.

Kudos from the Principal
1.       Kudos to Ms. Ritchie for all her work done around the National Junior Honor Society program.
2.       Kudos to Mr. Hayes for organizing “Pennies for Haiti.”  We raised enough pennies to circle the entire school.
3.       Kudos to Ms. Vasquez for organizing Literacy Night.

Principal’s Quote of the Month
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL
Please join us on Thursday, May 20 or Friday May 21 for “It’s All Greek To Me!” during the Spring Arts Festival at Nelsen.  Food and festivities start at 6:00 p.m. and the play begins at 7:00 p.m.  Look for more details in the May newsletter.

STUDENT PROGRESS
The end of the third quarter will be Friday, April 16.  Progress reports will be sent home with your student during the last week of April.  You may access your student’s information on Gateway, such as attendance, class schedule, missing work and grades. If you are having difficulty accessing this information, please call Terri Zura @ 425-204-3056.  You may wish to contact Mr. Jones (6th grade counselor at 204-3013), Ms. Fairhart  (7th grade counselor at 204-3015) or Mr. Graham (8th grade counselor at 204-3017) to see if they can assist you with any questions or concerns.

PTSA NOMINATIONS
It is that time of year again.  We are looking for individuals who may be interested in serving for the 2010-11 PTSA executive committee.  The positions open are President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.  Nominations are needed no later than April 30.  This year’s nominating committee contacts are:  Karen Carpenter at 2bacarpenter@comcast.net  and Eileen Richards at etrichards@comcast.net.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The Renton School District will no longer send hard copy notices home with students of sex offenders being released in the area.  Using the King County’s Sheriff's Office’s new dissemination process, the district will alert parents using school newsletters to visit the county’s Web site when a sex offender moves into, or is released into the area. The King County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding a Level II sex offender that has moved into the Skyway area, south of Seattle.
View the release, and information about all sex offenders throughout the county, at http://www.icrimewatch.net/offenderdetails.php?OfndrID=827255&
AgencyID=54473

You are receiving this message as a public service to assist the Sheriff’s Office in releasing the information to the greater public.

Carrie's Note:  Each student receives a copy of the "Nelsen News", to bring home each month.  If you have not received one, or are missing the current issue, ask your child if he/she has it in their backpack, or binder.  Attached to each Nelsen News is a copy of the Calendar of the month.  Due to server limitations, I am unable to attach it or reproduce the same, in its original format.

Please be sure to ask your child for the Nelsen News at the beginning of the month, and regularly check with them for any other important school handouts!

The e-mail updates are not intended to replace regular U.S. mail, or written material sent through the students. The updates serve as additional notice, or a precursor of things to come, and help to rally parents and promote camaraderie.  This will especially help for upcoming events that may require parental support.

Thank you!

WASHINGTON STATE PTSA NEWS

There are a number of opportunities for members to become active at the state PTA level - and we want to take advantage of all the great folks we have in our association.  Please read below and get involved - and please send this along to all of your PTA contact lists!

Convention

We need your involvement at Convention - and Early Bird registration is now open http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/con10/index.html.  Come for the training and networking AND to help our association conduct the work we need to get done - By-Law changes, Resolutions and electing new officers.  We can't do this without you!

Committees

We are looking to significantly engage members in two new WSPTA endeavors - the Resource Development Committee and the Strategic Plan Task Force.  While we would certainly like folks with background in these areas, we also want members who can give us the "in the trenches" perspective.  Or if you are looking for other ways to be involved after your "leadership" service is over, this would be a great opportunity for you.

For information on the Resource Development Committee: http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/board_committees/Call_WSPTA_
Resource_Committee.pdf

For information on the Strategic Plan Task Force:  http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/board_committees/Call_
WSPTA_Strategic_Committee.pdf

Applications will be accepted through May 5th, but please don't delay in submitting yours!

If you have questions about any of this, please let me know!  Thanks for your involvement!

COMMUNITY NEWS

PSESD Board Vacancy Assistance

Puget Sound ESD Director District Five Board Member, Ed Prince, resigned his position on the Board at the February Board meeting due to new family commitments (a new baby!).  District Five represents the school districts of Renton, Kent and a small portion of Seattle School District, and the Director selected must resided in one of these areas.  (They also cannot be employed by a King or Pierce County School District.)

This is an excellent way to be involved in education.  Information on Puget Sound ESD and the vacancy can be found as follows:
